Ahead of tonight’s trip to Boundary Park, rewind in time to last season when Chris Beech’s side ran out 3-1 winners in our first ever trip to Oldham’s famous ground.
Last season was the first time the two sides had been competitively challenging in the same league, but it was a year which saw the Coasters do the double over the Latics, scoring three in both respective encounters.
Whilst the game had the potential to have an end-of-season feel, Fylde were still fighting for survival and the victory at Boundary Park proved to be a crucial three points.
The game got off to an unbelievable start for the Coasters who came flying out of the blocks with Nick Haughton at the heart of the action.
After a line-breaking run from Bryce Hosannah opened up the Oldham defence, the ball was threaded in behind for Nick Haughton to seal the opener as he slotted the ball across the face of the goal.
Haughton’s opener sparked early celebrations but the Coasters weren’t stopping there.
Without much more time passing, Beech’s side were gifted an opportunity to double their lead from a set piece. Mitchell swung the corner in left footed which evaded everyone in the Oldham defence before being slammed home by Adam Long from close range.
Things went from good to great for the visiting side just after the half hour mark as Haughton was again involved, whipping in an inch-perfect set piece from the right which was flicked on perfectly from Ethan Mitchell to put Fylde three to the good.
Oldham did grab a consolation goal from Dan Gardener on the stroke of half time, but a red card on the hour mark for Mike Fondop eliminated all hopes of a remarkable comeback.
With strong game management being shown from Beech’s side to see out the result after a stunning start, the three points went a long way to boosting Fylde to safety as they avoided relegation.
