The future stars of European football are set to grace Mill Farm next week, as Benfica and Hertha Berlin’s U23 sides lock horns in the Premier League International Cup.

The high-calibre clash is set to take place at 7pm at Mill Farm on Wednesday 25th September, in what will be the first game in Group C of the tournament.

Both clubs have unique European history, with Benfica having won back-to-back European cups in the 1960’s – and their development teams will be a crucial area for them going forward.

Manchester City duo Bernardo Silva and Ederson are part of a long line of Benfica’s academy graduates to have made a name for themselves world-wide, whilst most recently Joao Felix moved to Atletico for £113m after spending his formative years in the world-leading academy.

“It is true testament to the facilities we have on offer here at Mill Farm that we have been initially approached and ultimately chosen to host this game,” said Jamie Roberts, Chief Executive of AFC Fylde.

“The tournament will return again in December when Porto will face PSV Eindhoven, and both games will give our fans the opportunity to see some of the most exciting young talent that European football has to offer.”

Berlin, too, have produced a fine line of academy graduates, with the likes of Jerome and Kevin-Prince Boateng starting out at the German side.

The earlier kick off of 7pm which will hopefully mean that younger fans can attend and enjoy a different brand of football.
