Youngsters at Roseacre Primary Academy, Blackpool, are kick-starting their week with free yoga sessions from the AFC Fylde Community Foundation.
Every Monday morning, Michael Brown, the Foundation’s health and wellbeing manager, visits the school to deliver the sessions, aimed at increasing confidence, concentration and coordination through physical activity.
The children are encouraged to be vocal and express their emotions as they move, whilst they are taken through visualisations which emphasise the idea that they are special and unique.
Tom Hutton, director of community development at the Foundation, said: “It’s exciting to see more and more schools taking up our yoga sessions to enrich pupils lives. Time and time again we hear about the positive impact these sessions have on young minds.
“It’s not just about getting children exercising, it’s also about giving them confidence in themselves and the tools to think about, and nurture, their own wellbeing.”
Ryan Adderley, PE development coordinator at Roseacre Primary Academy, said: “Our first yoga session with the AFC Fylde team was fantastic. The kids have such a good time and it really set them up for a positive and productive week. We could see the difference in the children straight away, so it’s definitely something we are excited to continue into the New Year.”
