Manager Dave Challinor admits Saturday’s National League clash against a rejuvenated Solihull Moors will be far from straightforward.
The Coasters headed to struggling Maidstone United last weekend on the back of four consecutive victories however they were undone by a single goal south of the capital and Challinor believes Solihull will provide an equally tough test to his promotion-chasers in the final home game of the season.
Challinor said: “I spoke to Jay Saunders (Maidstone manager) after the game about Solihull because they had just been there. I fully believe that if Solihull had the team they have now at the start of the season then they wouldn’t be in the position that they currently find themselves in.
“It’s a really, really tough league. When you go into games on the back of a good run then expectation can almost become entitlement.
“Perhaps some thought that we would just turn up and roll Maidstone over last weekend, but I knew that wouldn’t be the case. This Saturday will be no different.
“Solihull are virtually safe now so they can come and play and do what they do. Both teams want the points but on top of that, players are playing for their futures at this stage of the season.
“They will want to prove themselves to managers, other clubs and other suiters that may be watching.
“This weekend is another challenge but hopefully we can bounce back again, as we have done really well this year.”
Challinor also defended his decision to take off top scorer Danny Rowe with the Coasters trailing at Maidstone.
“He has played a lot of football, but we have to maintain our standards. If something isn’t working then I have to make changes. I wouldn’t be doing myself or my squad justice if I leave people sat on the bench when someone out there is struggling to make any headway.
“Last Tuesday at Torquay was a heavy pitch and the role of a lone striker is a very difficult one. You have to give as much as you can for as long as you can. He looks leggy and it’s our responsibility to get players around him and look after him.
“It was a long week but I don’t want to use that as an excuse. If we couldn’t win then we had to find a way not to lose and we didn’t manage either. We have to put that right.”
Meanwhile, midfielder Sam Finley remains a doubt this weekend after missing out against Maidstone United through illness.
