Fylde produced a gutsy performance to beat play-off chasing Halifax Town away from home on Tuesday night.

A tidy Tyler Roberts finish and a Nick Haughton penalty either side of a Jamie Cooke spot kick was enough for Kevin Philips’ men to claim their second away win of the season.

The Coasters took the lead in brilliant fashion, with Roberts seizing onto a ball behind the Halifax defence, staying on his feet despite the attentions of Adam Adetoro, before calmly rounding the goalkeeper and slotting home.

They nearly doubled their lead a few moments later, when a lovely pass from Joe Riley set Bryce Hosannah away down the right hand side. The full-back’s cross was inch perfect and found the goalscorer Roberts, but his header from 12 yards was straight at the goalkeeper.

Ben Winterbottom kept his side with a wonderful save down low to his right, after brilliant work by Luca Thomas, the Coasters keeper tipping the forwards effort around the post.

The home side levelled matters 15 minutes later however, after failing to deal with a cross Angelo Cappello was bundled over in the box by Roberts and referee Steven Copeland pointed to the spot. Cooke dispatched the spot kick down the middle for the equaliser.

Winterbottom was called into action again by Thomas, this time getting a strong palm from the winger’s thirty yard effort at the end of the half.

Just after the break the tireless Gavin Massey was fouled in the box and up stepped Haughton to convert for the lead. Sam Johnson got a hand to it but there was too much pace as the number 10 took his tally to 13 league goals this season.

From there on in it was a defensive masterclass from the Coasters who held back attack after attack from the hosts.

First it was Cappello who forced Winterbottom into a wonderful finger tipped save onto the post and then Will Smith somehow didn’t convert from close range as the pressure piled on.

The Fylde defence was resolute however and WInterbottom produced another wonderful save right at the death as substitute Zak Emmerson ran through on goal in injury time. The Coasters shot stopper was equal to it and they even survived a scare from the resulting corner as Johnson, up from his goal, went inches wide with a header of his own.

A brilliant away victory sees Fylde move out of the relegation zone ahead of another massive game on Saturday at Aldershot.
